Serve
Whoever wishes to be great among you must be servant of all.
It is hard to serve until we die to self. As long as SELF is on the throne of our hearts, even acts of service to others only make us see how many goodness points SELF has earned
There are many ways to serve others. The first and most important thing is to put others ahead of self. Deliberately offer to others the opportunity to go first, to have the first roll from the plate, to go through the door first, to be first to use the copier, and so forth. It sounds like simple politeness, but that is what politeness is about: putting others first.
There are more dramatic things you can do.
- Volunteer to serve meals at a shelter
- Volunteer to do the dishes when it isn't your turn, but you know your spouse is really tired
- Visit patients in a nursing home
- Commiserate with a mother in the line at the grocery store
- Notice when someone around you seems lost and offer to help
